Most kids love the outdoors and as parents, Amanda and I are providing our two children with as many outdoor experiences as we can; bushwalks, time at a farm, the beach, rivers and of course, some hunting and shooting!

Throughout all this activity there are two fundamentals which I have learnt must be adhered too; the first is keeping them fed and the second is keeping them warm!

My son Nathan (5) has been coming hunting with me since a very early age, well before he could walk. And recently, my daughter Ruby (4) has begun to show some interest also, awesome!

I have never pushed my interest in hunting and shooting on them. Instead, I have let it progress naturally, offering gentle encouragement as their instinctive curiosity into just exactly what Dad is up to when he heads out, develops.

“My son Nathan (5) has been coming hunting with me since a very early age, well before he could walk. Recently, my daughter Ruby (4) has begun to show some interest also, awesome!”

In the early days I didn’t put a whole lot of thought into what they wore, just making sure that they were warm and comfortable. Now that they are much more active and able to ‘hit the hill’s’ with me, it made sense to look at something practical that was both affordable and that they could share.

Chatting with Ferg from Gun City, he suggested their very popular Gun City Kids 5 Piece Fleece Clothing Pack. I immediately checked it out on the Gun City website, perfect!

A couple of days later the pack arrived and the kids tore it open eager to try on the clothing. Included in the 5 piece pack is:

  • 1x Green Fleece Jacket
  • 1x Black Trousers
  • 1x Green Fleece T-shirts
  • 2x Green & Orange Beanies

After convincing them both that the clothing was to be shared (this was not easy!), it was then a matter of getting them out for some hill time! As it happened, Nathan and I had a father and son hunting and adventure trip planned during his summer school holidays. He was extremely excited and eager to try out his new gear!

We spent three days hunting and exploring the Central Plateau. For Nathan, the highlight of the trip was throwing rocks into the Waipakihi River, he couldn’t get enough of it!

An endless source of entertainment for Nathan!

For me, it was an evening stroll up the river with my son. It was special moment being with my boy in an area that my Dad introduced me too some 35+ years ago.

As soon as Nathan and I arrived back, Ruby was immediately on my case about it being her turn to go hunting. Oh, alright then, I’ll just have to go hunting again, haha! This was to be Ruby’s first ‘official’ hunting trip. Our mission was to head in behind Te Puke and set up a trail camera.

Sausages and bread, perfect!

It was a hot afternoon so Ruby decided that she would only need the T-Shirt but to bring the Jacket as well just in case it got ‘chilly’!

On the way in something special happened, Ruby got to see her first wild deer. As we neared the bush edge, I spotted a fallow fawn and doe about 25m away. They were both quick to see us but fortunately there was enough time for Ruby to see them. She was very excited, and I was absolutely stoked for her!

One happy kid! Ruby helping with the trail cam set up.

We continued to the spot where the trail cam was to be positioned and had some afternoon tea. Ruby helped me set it up and then we slowly made our way back to the truck. She became a wee bit tired, so I carried her the rest of the way in my Vorn backpack

The Vorn Deer 42L backpack is great for carrying your rifle or child!

The fleece pack was a hit. Both the kids loved wearing it and were happy to share it, that’s a win in my book! The great thing about it is the value for money and with plenty of size options available, you'll be able to keep them warm for as they continue to out grow their clothes!

Another good thing about fleece is that it doesn’t require much washing care, just chuck it in with the rest of the laundry.

With winter on the way you’ll be needing to keep those kids warm. Make sure you head over to Gun City to check out their Kids 5 Piece Fleece Clothing Pack!
